Writing Club: words spent in leisure
Working in leisure, the Writing Club chooses to meet twice a week over lunch; and because metaphors make the real into poetry, their writing makes poetic its existence. Filmed in June 2015, this short documentary film is about time and contemplation, about trust, and about the hope in words spent in leisure.
School and the Pursuit of Interests
Recovering the original meaning of leisure, this short documentary film redefines school as the time for the pursuit of one's interests. Filmed in the Fall of 2014, this student and teacher collaboration film pairs well with the article Standards: Why Realizing the Full Promise of Education Requires a Fresh Approach (a two-part conversation with Yong Zhao), written by Luba Vangelova.
Collection Folders at CPE 1: an education in leisure
Filmed in June 2014, this short documentary is about the use of collection folders at Central Park East 1 Elementary School in East Harlem, NYC. Over the years, each child's work is stored in a large collection folder the children will eventually take home once they graduate. Told through the voices of graduating fifth graders, as the children take a final look through the work collected in their folder, the film offers a different view on what assessment and evaluation can be. It is a film about time, contemplation, and about the promises of an education in leisure.
